Welcome to the Westport Deep Sea Fishing School

The school has been operating in the areas of
pre-employment training, vessel operations and seafood processing for over 30 years and continues to provide new entrants into the New Zealand seafood industry and build career pathways for our students and existing seafarers in the maritime industry.

We are based in Westport on the West Coast of the South Island and offer accommodation if required in our student hostel. The school prides itself on vocational training that is as hands on as possible.

Our training vessel

We offer a range practical training in our workshops for engineering, on our training vessel “Legionaire II” for vessel operations.
We believe the best training is hands on and most enjoyable training
is to be active wherever possible.

What our students say

#is unexpected | #is awesome | #has quality features | #saved my life | #is the best

"When I completed the 12-week course, I got a job working for a big Kiwi fishing company on one of their Deep Sea trawlers. I went from being unemployed to earning $50,000 a year.”
Anaru, age 24, Waikato
“I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I was at school. My Aunty knew someone who’d completed the Westport course and thought fishing would be good for me. I’ve never looked back. I love the job.”
James, age 20, nelson
“The course was a changing point for me. I’d never left home or lived anywhere else, but coming to Westport was amazing. Everyone on the course supports each other to do well. I’ve even learnt to cook!”
Tawera, Age 18, Hastings
