Marine Engineering Class 6

This programme is designed for individuals currently employed at sea who either hold a Maritime license with an engineering component or are working towards the entry-level Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) Licence Marine Engineer Class 6 (MEC6). This includes passenger, non-passenger, and fishing vessels.

The programme at the WDSFS includes time in our workshops and on our training vessel.

Programme Content

Topic 1:  Explain and observe safe working practices on board ship, and provide first aid and life support in emergency situations
Topic 2:  Identify key components and describe their purpose for specific engine and machinery parts
Topic 3:  Identify key components and describe their purpose for specific engine and machinery parts
Topic 4:  Operate, monitor and manage vessel's propulsion and auxiliary systems to maintain operational performance for a voyage
Topic 5:  Prepare vessel's machinery and systems for survey and slipway maintenance

Qualification gained

NZ2509 New Zealand Certificate in Marine Engineering Class 6 (Level 4)
STCW Elementary First Aid

Entry requirements

There are no minimum academic requirements for entry.

It is recommended that applicants be currently employed within a commercial maritime operation and/or have ongoing access to commercial vessels and MNZ qualified skippers to assist with your completion of the MNZ Workbook
To be eligible for the MNZ licence which this programme contributes towards.

Note: Entry to this qualification is open but completion does not guarantee the award of a Maritime New Zealand license. All persons wishing to qualify for a seafarer license must also check the Maritime New Zealand prior certification and minimum service requirements for that license.

Short Courses

These strands also include all the short courses you require to gain your licence, such as all the STCW basic and advanced short courses, and Radio certificates.

If you already hold any of these short courses, you do not need to do them again – we will credit them towards your programme.

Training Record Book

The Maritime NZ MEC6 Training Record Book is required for course completion and must be presented for the final MNZ exam.
