Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting 

This course aims to provide the training for candidates in fire prevention and fighting in accordance with Section A-VI/1 of the STCW code.
This course is open to all seafarers and prospective seafarers and is often required to be completed prior to employment on a sea-going ship.

On meeting the standards of this programme, a trainee will be able to take appropriate measures for the safety of personal and the ship and to use fire appliances correctly.

Programme Content

Topic 1:  Minimize the risk of fire
Topic 2:  Maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fires.
Topic 3:  Fight and extinguish fires

Qualification gained

On successful completion of this course and demonstration of competence you will be issued with a certificate certifying you have met the standards required in Table A-VI/1-2 of STCW 95.

Please note that course completion certificates will not be issued until we receive the following,
  • Valid Maritime NZ id
  • Passport image
  • Payment of program fees

Additional Information

Please bring clothing suitable for working in a fire and smoke environment.  Overalls are supplied for firefighting, but clothes may smell of smoke so again please have some older clothing and be aware of this. Sturdy solid enclosed shoes are required. No sandals or open shoes. Note, all required safety gear will be supplied.

It is required that all trainees are clean shaven, a guide will be provided to show acceptable facial hair. If these guidelines are not met, not practical training in live fire situations will be allowed and no course completion certificates will be awarded.

Entry requirements

All trainees will complete a medical questionnaire, and live training depends on no issues being identified.

  • A passport image
  • Valid ID as per Maritime NZ requirements
