Course Objectives

On completion, students will be able to
  • Learn the legal and operational requirements for using marine VHF and MF/HF (SSB) radios in New Zealand waters.
  • Gain practical knowledge of VHF and SSB radio systems, including their features, functions, and limitations.
  • Develop proficiency in routine calling techniques, including correct channel use, call signs, and message formats.
  • Learn how to initiate and respond to distress (Mayday), urgency (Pan-Pan), and safety (Sécurité) calls using proper protocols.
  • Understand the use of Digital Selective Calling (DSC), EPIRBs, and other emergency signaling devices.

This online program covers the theory and written assessment for the Maritime Restricted Radio Operators Certificate (MRROC) 

Assessment

This course features an online exam graded by WDSFS. After passing, you must complete an oral exam to fulfill the MRROC requirements. Successfully finishing both exams will make you eligible for a license.
